Anouck ZANA, a queer and feminist artist

Born and raised in Paris, I’ve been a designer ever since I was old enough to use my hands.
I was born with a pencil in one hand and grew up with a mouse in the other.

I've had many lives:

  • Traditional bookbinder
  • Fanzine editor
  • Graphic Designer / Web Designer
  • Art Director
  • Member of collectives
  • President of associations
  • Culture columnist (Art, Music)
  • Concert photographer
  • UX designer
  • Web Project Manager – Digital

Versatile and creative, it has always been important to me to listen and understand
the world around me to tailor my projects to the needs of others.
My approach is designed to be inclusive, with the aim of serving the community as best as possible.

Fanzines

As a graduate of the École Estienne, my unconventional career path has taught me discipline and independence, but above all, it has taught me to give my all.

In 2004, I founded the collective Les Alfes Blancs, with whom I am publishing my first fanzine of fantasy stories: The Werewolf.

In 2008, I started attending trade shows and conventions on my own to promote my own publications: Midnight: The Hour of Crime and Chronicle of a Small Thing. Until 2014, I ran a booth all over France and Belgium, where I also presented a few one-off projects such as Paintings.

Card Reading

I’ve loved the images on cards ever since I was a child: whether it was Panini stickers or trading cards, this passion for “pocket-sized” visuals took on a whole new dimension when I discovered the Tarot.

Beyond aesthetics, what fascinates me is the possibility of playing with the cards to tell a different story and make it resonate with our own. As a true Queen of Swords, when it comes to matching archetypes with images, I seek meaning and precision, accessibility, and the ability to communicate with as many people as possible.

And it always starts with a lot of research.

Interview by Alicé from the Instagram account @atropia during a visit to Paris. I told him about my creative process for the Clear the Deck Lenormand deck. The show aired on Radio Campus as part of the Radio Tarot program.

Alternative Deck Makers

Alternative Deck Makers (ADM) is a collective for creators—whether independent or not—of tarot and oracle decks that are inclusive, queer, feminist, and/or political.

The goal of this group is to:

  • discuss and share their challenges
  • learn from one another and support each other on their projects
  • discuss issues related to inclusion and diversity
  • promote the work of its members
